TERMITES:   They eat wood from the inside, making them especially destructive because they are hard to spot. Termites eat wood in and around your house, including furniture. They can also found feasting on utility poles and in dead or dying trees in your yard. They do not need water to survive because their system produces water in the digestion process.

CARPENTER ANTS:   These pests are different from termites in that they do not eat wood, but they still cause serious damage to your house. Carpenter ants tunnel into damp wood and build nests. Once the nest is built the queen will lay eggs, and the workers will gather food for her and her offspring.

What can you do if you find this pest in or around your house? Watch to see where the tunnel is, also look for a pile of sawdust near the area. Upon locating the tunnel, drill as far into the area as possible, then fill it with a treatment purchased from a hardware store or a lawn and garden shop. Once treated you will need to replace the ruined wood.

How can you avoid the pest? Examine your yard, removing rotting wood such as tree stumps. If you live in an area of the country where you stock firewood you need to exercise caution when bringing the wood into the house, making sure the pests are not hiding under the bark.
